DESCRIPTION:The top 10 teams from Washington State University’s UNIV 104 freshman seminar course will compete virtually for prizes as part of the third Adobe Creative Jam. The public is invited to watch the presentations online. Finalists will present apps they created that are centered around this year’s theme of “resiliency.” The top teams were chosen from a field of 60 teams of two to three students each across 13 sections of the popular first-year course. Teams will be judged by WSU faculty and staff plus an industry professional\, and will receive constructive feedback. Five winning teams will receive prizes from Adobe. SUMMARY:Common Reading: Robert Miller on the “The Doctrine of Discovery”
DESCRIPTION:Professor Robert J. Miller\, member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and professor of law at Arizona State University\, will speak on the “Doctrine of Discovery.” This concept was used by European monarchies to legitimize the colonization of lands outside of Europe.  This doctrine established a spiritual\, political\, and legal justification for seizure of land occupied by Indigenous People\, including in North America. In addition to teaching law\, Miller serves as interim Chief Justice for the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Court of Appeals and Appellate Judge for the Courts of Appeals of the Shawnee Tribe\, the Grand Ronde Tribe\, and Northwest Inter-Tribal Court System. This talk is hosted by the Office of Tribal Relations and Native American Programs as part of the third annual celebration of Indigenous People’s Day.  Common Reading credit will be available. DESCRIPTION:The open-apply period for students wishing to present at SURCA ends at midnight. Undergraduates engaged in mentored research\, scholarship\, and creative activities from all majors are invited to submit abstract summaries of their work and results to be considered to present at the Showcase for Undergraduate Research\, Scholarship\, and Creative Activity (SURCA). The event is hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research\, part of DAESA. Each year\, nearly 200 students from across the university are accepted\, based on their abstract submissions\, to talk to judges and the public about their pursuit of knowledge and their findings that are either new\, or confirm existing information. DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2020 Career Expo\, hosted by the Academic Success and Career Center (ASCC) in DAESA\, will be from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday\, Feb. 4\, in Beasley Coliseum. Students from all majors can connect with employers and organization representatives about jobs\, internships\, information\, and much more. Information on the ASCC website is available both for students planning to prepare and attend\, and for employers and representatives intending to host a booth. ASCC also hosts a career event each fall for all students. DESCRIPTION:The annual Etiquette Dinner for spring 2020\, hosted by the Academic Success and Career Center (ASCC) in DAESA\, brings students together with faculty\, staff\, and guests over a meal.  They explore the challenges of eating and joining conversations\, breaking bread and answering questions at the same time\, and which utensils are used for what purposes. The knowledge gained will help the students be better prepared to face real-world interviews—including dining opportunities—with future employers and graduate schools.
