SUMMARY:Common Reading: Robert Miller on the “The Doctrine of Discovery”
DESCRIPTION:Professor Robert J. Miller\, member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and professor of law at Arizona State University\, will speak on the “Doctrine of Discovery.” This concept was used by European monarchies to legitimize the colonization of lands outside of Europe.  This doctrine established a spiritual\, political\, and legal justification for seizure of land occupied by Indigenous People\, including in North America. In addition to teaching law\, Miller serves as interim Chief Justice for the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Court of Appeals and Appellate Judge for the Courts of Appeals of the Shawnee Tribe\, the Grand Ronde Tribe\, and Northwest Inter-Tribal Court System. This talk is hosted by the Office of Tribal Relations and Native American Programs as part of the third annual celebration of Indigenous People’s Day.  Common Reading credit will be available.
