Smith Teaching and Learning Grants
The Vice Provost for Academic Engagement and Student Achievement is responsible for soliciting grant proposals for innovative ideas that enhance teaching and learning at WSU. Applications are due in spring. Grants are typically awarded and announced in mid- to late April. Awards can be used as summer salary with benefits paid from the award amount.
Focus Areas for Award Cycles
Proposals are typically sought that address are few specific areas through innovative practices that improve student learning. Recent foci have included:
- Increasing course completion and student progress by reducing high C-DFW rates (grades of C-minus, D, F, or Withdraw) and/or closing equity gaps.
- Redesigning large lecture courses (100+ students) for active student engagement in a flipped or hybrid course design.

Don’t Forget the Chair’s Endorsement
You will be asked to upload a chair’s signed endorsement of the project. This document attests that the fund recipient(s) will have continued employment at WSU in the applicable academic year.
Please note: Proposals without the chair’s endorsement will not be accepted.
Smith Grants Application Form
The application period for submitting proposals for the 2021 round of Smith Grants is now closed. The applications that were submitted are now being reviewed. Awards will be announced in mid to late April 2021.
